Centerpiece Jazz Mass

A Liturgical Jazz Mass in Western North Carolina

The Centerpiece Jazz Quartet performs a New Orleans-style Jazz Mass for area Churches. All service music, including fraction anthems, and hymns are part of the program. Examples include “Wade in the Water,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Amazing Grace.” The group also performs Communion pieces such as: “Let Us Break Bread Together”; Service music such as: The "Old 100" Doxology; Sanctus S125 and the Fraction Anthem “Lamb of God” are also included in a typical program. Other Processional hymns such as “God of Grace, God of Glory” are also included.

Joseph Hasty, a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton (who also sings in the Grace Church choir) leads the group, founded in 1995. "Centerpiece Jazz" performs in Western North Carolina for clubs and private parties and has provided Jazz Mass service music for parishes in the area (Grace Church, St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s - all in Morganton - as well as St. Matthias in Asheville are some examples).

In addition to Hasty, who plays rhythm guitar and sings lead vocals, Centerpiece Jazz includes Robert George, saxophone from Lenoir; Ben McPherron, upright bass from Boone; and Dick Hull on lead guitar from Hickory.
